About Tupac Shakur

Tupac was born on 16 June 1971 in East Harlem, New York, United States. He is the son of Billy Garland and Alice Faye Williams.

His parent lost contact with each other when Tupac was five years old. Then his mother took care of him and his sister.

His mother, Afeni, was raising two children on her own and struggled for money. The family moved homes often, sometimes staying in shelters.

They moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1984. Where Tupac enrolled at the prestigious Baltimore School for the Arts, at which he felt “the freest I ever felt.” Also met and become good friends with Jada Pinkett Smith.

His family moved again in 1988 to Oakland, California. His first breakthrough in music came in 1991 as a member of the group Digital Underground.

In the same year he received individual recognition for his album “2Pacalypse Now,” but this album was also the beginning of his notoriety as a leading figure of the gangster permutation of hip-hop, with references to cop killing and sexual violence.

His solo movie career also began in this year with Juice (1992), and in 1992 he co-starred with Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice (1993).

Shakur achieved further critical and commercial success with his follow-up albums Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… (1993) and the critically acclaimed Me Against the World (1995), which has been considered as his magnum opus.

When he was heading up with his career is when started to have problems with law enforcement.

A 15-day jail term in 1994 for assault and battery and, in 1995, a conviction for sexual assault of a female fan. After serving 8 months pending an appeal, Shakur was released from jail.

His double-disc album All Eyez on Me (1996) became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot four times by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas; he died six days later and the gunman was never captured.

The Notorious B.I.G., Shakur’s friend turned rival, was at first considered a suspect, but was also murdered in another drive-by shooting several months later.

Five more albums have been released since his death, all of which have been certified Platinum.

Shakur is one of the best-selling music artists of all time having sold over 75 million records worldwide.

In 2002, he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Rolling Stone named Shakur in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
