About Amy Lee

Amy was born on 13 December 1981 in Riverside, California, United States. She is the daughter John Lee, a dick jockey and television personality, and Sara Cargill.

She has two sisters, Carrie and Lori. Lee had a younger sister who died in 1987 at the age of three from an unidentified illness and a brother named Robby who died in 2018 after struggling with severe epilepsy for most of his life.

Lee’s family moved to many places, including West Palm Beach, Florida, and Rockford, Illinois, and eventually settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Evanescence was formed.

Lee graduated from Pulaski Academy, a private school in Little Rock, in 2000. She briefly attended Middle Tennessee State University in 2000 to study music theory and composition but dropped out to focus on Evanescence.

She met Ben Moody at a youth camp, while she was performing Meat Loaf’s “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” on the piano. Moody was quite impressed with her performance and the duo started their musical partnership within a month. They performed in small book stores and coffee houses.

Amy Lee has cited Björk, Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, Portishead, and Nirvana as her primary musical influences.

Lee’s contributions were crucial to the success of Evanescence studio albums, including Fallen (2003), The Open Door (2006), and Evanescence (2011). When Moody left the band due to “creative differences” in October 2003, he was replaced by Terry Balsamo, the former guitarist of the alternative metal band Cold.

Amy Lee has won several awards and accolades. The National Music Publishers Association honored her with Songwriter Icon Award in June 2008. Lee was named the 2012 Rock Goddess of the Year in the Loudwire Music Awards, and was presented with the Best Vocalist honor at the 2012 Revolver Golden Gods Awards.

Amy Lee is often ranked one of the hottest women in rock music. She was in a relationship with Seether singer Shaun Morgan from 2003 to 2005. Lee married Josh Hartzler, a therapist and long-time friend, in May 2007. Their first child, Jack Lion Hartzler, was born in July 2014.
